Project Title

TreeO, Relau — Minimalist Japandi Living in Penang

Project Overview

Nestled within the TreeO development in Relau, Penang, this 900 sq ft condominium unit is a study in quiet restraint. Designed around the Japandi philosophy — a fusion of Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian warmth — every corner of this home prioritises calm, function, and honest materiality.

The brief was clear: create a home that feels like an exhale. No visual clutter, no unnecessary ornamentation. Just light, natural wood tones, and spaces that breathe.

Design Philosophy

Japandi is not simply a visual style — it is a way of living. We drew from wabi-sabi, the Japanese appreciation of imperfection and impermanence, and paired it with the Nordic principle of hygge: warmth, cosiness, and intentional comfort. The result is a home that is both serene and liveable.

Key principles applied:

  • Neutral, warm off-white walls throughout to unify the space
  • Light oak wood laminate as the dominant material — wardrobes, bed platforms, desks, and side tables all share the same grain language
  • Indirect LED strip lighting used consistently across bedrooms and living areas to replace harsh overhead glare with soft ambient warmth
  • Clean-line cabinetry with push-to-open or recessed handles to eliminate visual noise
  • Layered curtain system (sheer + blackout) in warm taupe, echoing the wood palette

Spaces

Living Room The living room anchors the home with an arched feature niche, a wall-mounted TV, and a floating white media console. A cream leather sofa with plum accent cushions introduces the only deliberate colour contrast. A large-blade ceiling fan keeps the tropical climate comfortable without disrupting the clean ceiling plane. Cove lighting above the full-height curtain track adds a soft golden crown to the space at night.

Dining & Open Corridor A slatted timber-and-ribbed-glass partition screen elegantly separates the living area from the dining zone without closing it off. The dining table in dark timber sits beneath a lit bar cabinet stocked with personality — one of the few expressive moments in an otherwise pared-back home. Floating shelves along the corridor keep greenery and objects at eye level, drawing the gaze toward the kitchen.

Kitchen Compact and highly functional, the U-shaped kitchen features white handleless lower cabinets, dark wood-tone upper cabinets, and a white Calacatta-style quartz countertop. A grey ceramic splashback panel adds subtle texture. Under-cabinet LED lighting ensures the workspace is always well-lit. A countertop water purifier and induction hob reflect the homeowners’ preference for clean, modern appliances.

Master Bedroom The master bedroom is the emotional centrepiece of the home. A dark walnut-toned platform bed with built-in drawers and floating LED underlighting creates a grounded, almost meditative sleeping environment. A cantilevered bedside nook doubles as a surface for personal objects. The headboard panel runs flush into a cove-lit wall shelf, with warm light cascading upward onto the bare wall above — a signature Japandi move.

Secondary Bedroom Lighter in tone, the secondary bedroom uses the same light oak laminate across the full-height wardrobe and headboard panel. A continuous LED strip behind the headboard panel echoes the master’s lighting language. A wall-mounted reading lamp provides task light without occupying surface space.

Study / Gaming Room The study room is purpose-built for focus. An L-shaped built-in desk in light oak provides generous surface area. Overhead, a matte black floating shelf unit with integrated LED lighting displays personal collectibles and art prints, creating a curated backdrop. The desk setup includes dual monitors, a mechanical keyboard, a condenser microphone, and a headphone stand — functional tools treated as design objects.

Custom Furniture Details

  • A bespoke sofa side table in light oak veneer slides neatly beside the sofa arm — custom-made to match the living room’s material palette
  • A TV console platform in the secondary room integrates a sofa bed beneath, with LED underlighting to visually float the furniture
  • Rounded timber corners appear throughout as a recurring soft detail — seen on the platform bed edge and desk corners — softening the geometry without compromising the minimalist form
